THE NEW KINGDOM IN EGYPT

A new capital city was established at Thebes, and that’s where the pharaoh lived in his palace. Thebes’ chief god, Amen, became combined with Ra and was known as Amen-Ra. The priests of Amen-Ra had a lot of power and wealth at this time.   The book does not tell you this, but you should know this, too: Pyramids were no longer built from this time on (from the New Kingdom onward). Instead, the pharaohs began creating elaborate tombs across the Nile River from the city of Thebes (the new capital city) in what is known as the Valley of the Kings.  This is the area where the famous tKing Tut's tomb was discovered. The Valley of the Kings is one of the most significant archaeological sites in all of Egypt.
