General World History Articles

Student Web Assignments  (Oh, yea! There's even more to do!)

Extra credit options for desperate students—

When someone needs extra credit, you may submit a brief report (300 word, typed, double spaced) on a movie, book, or specific topic of interest to you which relates to world history pre 1650 AD. These should be approved first by me.

You  may also have extra credit if you visit any of the following places and take notes, then type up a brief report describing what you saw and turn it in: 250 word min., typed, double spaced.

  1. Michael C. Carlos Museum --Emory University’s museum, downtown Atlanta – has fantastic collection of Egyptian and Sumerian artifacts
  2. High Museum in Atlanta
  3. New Echota – north Ga. Just off I-75, near Calhoun, GA
  4. Etowah Indian Mounds and museum – Cartersville, GA just north of Atlanta off I-75
    Ocmulgee Indian Mounds, Macon, GA

More ideas:

Watch the Archimedes youtube video on the homepage on this site. Continue watching other segments on youtube. Watch at least two of these and write up a paragraph or two on what you learned.

Student Web Assignments

[These assignment links are geared to the study of Streams of Civilization, Vol.1]

Quarter 1

Chapter 2a-- Cuneiform

  1. http://www.mesopotamia.co.uk/writing/home_set.html
Go to the above site and read what's there, then click on "story" at the bottom of the page and follow it through to the end.
[If you want to play a "game," click on "challenge" over in the left hand column. You may think it's lame, but I had fun with it.]
  2. Archaeology that backs the Bible
    http://www.ancient-hebrew.org/21_nebosarsekim.html
Write a sentence or two on this article and describe (1) what it is about and (2) what the significance is. Put World History at the top along with your name (do this on all such assignments). You'll be turning this in so type it or make it neat and legible. It should not look like cuneiform :)

Chapter 2b-- Egypt

  1. Write your name or some phrase in hieroglyphs here. Print it out ---Leave room at the bottom for writing the answers to #4 and #5, too, (or write on the back) and bring it to class.
    http://www.quizland.com/hiero.htm
  2. Go to this site: http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/gods/explore/main.html
Click on the god Horus. The "eye of Horus" is a motif (image) used a great deal in ancient Egypt. Read here where the idea of the "eye" comes from. How did Horus lose his eye? What happened to it? What did it symbolize to the Egyptians? Write your answers at the bottom of your hieroglyphs paper.
  3. Next, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankh
Draw and write down the name of this Egyptian symbol. It is the one most often used to represent Egypt. Record what it represents. You can read the rest of the article but you don't have to. There's an argument about where this symbol originated. No one knows for sure, but it was adopted as a Christian symbol by the Coptic (Egyptian) Church.

Egypt: Chapter 3a

  1. Read about the "Mummy's Curse" that supposedly surrounded the opening of the tomb of Tutankhamen.
    http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/curse.htm
  2. The "Mummy's Curse" is not a new idea. The ancient Egyptians themselves wrote about it. What do they theorize as being the possible source for this  ancient superstition? Record answers on a separate sheet of paper (not your worksheet).
  3. Read about the man who brought the gospel to Egypt centuries later (around 60AD). Read the intro paragraph and "St. Mark the Evangelist." Most of this information comes from a particular book -- List title, author, and date written.
    http://www.touregypt.net/chiste3.htm

Chapter 5:  Greek Alphabet Assignment

Read the brief introduction to the Greek Alphabet and jot down 3 reasons this alphabet is significant. Next, write out the letters, both the capital and lower case, in your own hand along with the name of the letter. Don't print this out from your computer. I want you to draw the letters yourself. Capital letter, lower case letter, + its name.
