How to Praise Your Child for Best Results

This You Tube video deals with the effect of certain kinds of praise on kids. Is it best to praise a child’s effort or his intelligence–and does it even matter? In the book Nurture Shock: New Thinking about Children, the authors report on a very similar experiment involving several hundred young elementary school students, and the findings were the same as those reported in this video. Watch it and see.

I highly recommend reading Nurture Shock. It was a New York Times best seller in 2009, but I didn’t discover it until early this year. Now it’s part of my standard “baby gift” for new mothers. The authors took some of the most surprising recent findings on growth and development and wrote them up. It covers a variety of topics related to babies through the teen years. I guarantee the book to be entertaining, a little shocking, and highly educational for parenting!
